7 Awesome Dark Exteriors

One item on the "house" to do list is painting its exterior.   With so many hues and color combinations to choose from, I'm finding myself drawn to very dark shades of grey, green and even black.  Plants and many elements, such as wood and metal, stand out against dark canvases and provide dramatic contrasts.   Take a look at 7 very inspiring exterior images:

How awesome is that orange door?  It wouldn't have the same effect if the exterior of the house were light, now would it?!?

So Pinteresting: 7 Fantastic Outdoor Rooms And Tips For Creating Your Own

Even the mildest winter is followed by spring.  It's time to begin thinking about and planning our outdoor spaces.  Whether they're big, small, roof topped or open, outdoor 'rooms' allow you to fully appreciate nature's wonderful perks.  Take a look at 7 very special outdoor spaces and tips for creating your very own.

To see more of our outdoor 'room' click here.

Tips for creating an outdoor room:

1. Define your outdoor space and decorate it as you would your indoor space.  Make the two cohesive.

2.  Create privacy with large plants, curtains or natural screens.

2.  Add lighting.  It can be provided by candles, solar or electric lights.

3.  Have plenty of seating for guests and make it comfortable with pretty cushions and pillows.  Keep a throw handy for chilly nights.

4.  Place small pots on tables and side tables with interesting plants (i.e. succulents or bromeliads).

5.  Don't over accessorize with garden art and sculptures.  Less is more in nature.

6.  Look for affordable garden furniture on Craigslist and at garage/yard  sales.  Remember that you can use indoor furniture as well.

7.  Have designated outdoor plates and glasses.  I keep a basket stocked with napkins, flatware, dishes and candles so that when that spontaneous BBQ happens, I'm quasi ready.

Maybe I should add a flask or two of Gin & Tonics to it...

So Pinteresting: 12 Inspiring Outdoor Images

Now that our rubber roof has been repaired, I'm ready to create an interesting outdoor living space.  It needs to be safe for kids, retreat-like for adults and a botanical haven.  Since one can look down onto the yard from this deck,  I'd like some unifying elements in each.  I've picked a few inspiring images that feature things like pitched roofs, wood decking,  shade controls, lots of planters,  privacy fences, soaking tubs and modern touches.  Take a look at my most recent "pinning" obsession.

Outdoor Living With Black Wicker

I love the look of black wicker.   It's a nice change from the traditional white and straw color we see so often.  It creates a sharp contrast with the summer light making for a sophisticated outdoor setting.  This time of year outdoor furniture and accessories go on sale so buy now for next season or update your look for this one.
